Art Education
The program in Art Education at the School of Art & Design prepares students to be teachers of art at all levels of public, private, and community education.
Our goal is to make art making more accessible in the lives of children, adolescents, and young adults. Your coursework will include art theory & practice, studio, art history, and education courses, and culminate in a semester of student teaching in the public schools. Additionally, community engagement opportunities—from short-term field work to semester-long internships—will broaden your academic experience and prepare you to become a professional in the field of art education.
The art education program is located on the first floor of the School of Art & Design, in the Joann Cole Mitte building.
The Student Experience
Art Education students engage with a wide variety of art making materials while experiencing many different ways of teaching art. As an artist, you might work with tools and processes as diverse as drawing, ceramics, and printmaking to electronics, digital 3D printing, and computer programming. At the same time you'll learn to teach children, adolescents, and adults how to make art—in elementary and secondary schools, in museums, at informal events on campus, in the San Marcos community, and right here in the studios of the School of Art & Design.
Prospective Students
We're looking for artists who are passionate about making art available in the lives of children (elementary level), adolescents and young adults (middle school and high school), and the community. Our graduates teach in public schools, museums, after school programs, and a multitude of non-traditional learning ecologies. The common denominator is a dedication to both art and education. Apply for admission to Texas State University!
We welcome inquiries and questions about our program. We also invite prospective students to take a tour and sit in on a class. For more information, contact Dr. Adetty Pérez de Miles, Art Education Coordinator. You can also learn more at Art Education Program Details and Art Education Resources.
