As the creative practices contained in the School of Art & Design are widely varied, many specialized work labs and studios exist to facilitate students in their studies. The hours and policies in these spaces vary, and are established by the relevant area heads and facility managers.

JCM1118 Sculpture Lab and Woodshop
The Sculpture Lab features an open workspace, shared critique space, metal working equipment (MIG welders, metal grinders, tube roller), outdoor foundry with indoor wax and ceramic shell room, mold-making facilities, and student accessible tool cage.
Woodshop includes Saw Stop table saw, panel saw, bandsaws, various sanders, brad nailer, drill press, and corded hand tools.

JCM1126 Metals Lab
The Metals program at Texas State University provides students with access to a comprehensive studio equipped for both traditional and contemporary metalsmithing techniques. Facilities include individual workbenches, a dedicated soldering and casting area, enameling kilns, hydraulic presses, polishing and forming equipment, and computer workstations with CAD software. Students also benefit from a collaboration with the Materials Innovation Lab, which offers digital fabrication resources such as laser cutting and 3D printing. The program supports both fine art jewelry and object-making through coursework that emphasizes technical skill, design development, and conceptual exploration. -
JCM4105 Painting Studio
The Painting Studio features a large open workspace with great natural lighting. In addition, a shared critique space, painting equipment such as easels, mixing tables, and palette racks. Students are given space to store paintings in progress along with drying racks for large paintings. -
JCM4112 Printmaking Studio
Printmaking’s facilities are ready to accommodate all processes within Screenprinting, Intaglio, Lithography, and Relief printing. We produce film positives for various exposure processes, including polymer plate intaglio, photo lithography, and screenprinting. Our presses and vacuum tables have maximum image sizes of: 2.5x3.5’ intaglio; 3x5’ litho and relief; and 4x5’ in screen.

Studio Art Risograph Room
Texas State University Department of Art and Design houses 2 Risograph Labs. The Studio Art Risograph Lab allows students taking Risograph and drawing classes to work hands on with the Risograph Duplicator and learn stencil-based design processes, digital color separation, and a range of experimental approaches to image making.

JCM 3107K Communication Design Fabrication Lab
The Communication Design Fabrication Lab and print facility feature a wide selection of printing and finishing equipment. The lab is a shared workspace with a large table topped with a cutting mat and a range of finishing equipment, including a thermal binder, wire binder, corner rounders, book presses, and a guillotine. The print facility is a monitored space open during select hours. It houses a Riso MF9450, Epson SureColor p6000 large format inkjet printer, Ricoh SP C840 laser printer, and a Summa vinyl cutter. We stock 12 Riso ink colors: Aqua, Black, Blue, Bubblegum Pink, Crimson, Kelly Green, Fluorescent Pink, Fluorescent Orange, Melon, Violet, White, and Yellow. Ledger-size paper is available in various colors: Blue, Cream, Goldenrod, Gray, Green, and Pink.

JCM4107 Expanded Media Labs
Expanded Media students have access to an array of video equipment (including Sony Cinema Line Cameras), lighting studios, an audio recording suite, a video editing computer lab, and a communal space for sharing ideas and collaboration. Our Equipment Cage offers students the ability to check out video, audio, projection, lighting equipment and more.

SAB104C Photography Darkroom
The Sabinal darkroom is fully equipped for processing and printing Black & White film onto RC and fiber-based papers in a temperature-controlled environment using SPRINT chemistry.
Our processing kits include metal tanks & reels for 35mm and 120 film and Jobo Multitanks for 4x5 sheet film. Our printing darkroom is equipped with Beseler 23CII and 45X enlargers to accommodate all common film formats. UV Boxes for Cyanotype and alternative process printing are available upon request. -
SAB105/106 Photography Computer Labs
Sabinal has two digital labs equipped with iMacs and Adobe Creative Cloud. The labs also contain multiple Epson scanners and printers for student use such as the SP800 (17" sheet), P900 (17" sheet), Stylus Pro 4900 (17" sheet/roll), SureColor P7570 (24" sheet/roll), SureColor P9000 (44" sheet/roll), and Perfection V700 and V800 scanners (8"x12" Bed) with wet mount capabilities.

SAB109A/B Lighting Studio
The photo program maintains two 400 sq. foot lighting studios with the flexibility to open them into one large space for extensive shoots. The studio has a full range of lighting equipment, backdrops, and accessories including Speedotron and Novatron Strobe Kits and ARRI and Lowel Omni Continuous Light Kits.
